Oh Give Me a Home!

M & I are one step closer to having a weekend home. Those of you that live in NYC probably understand that a weekend home can make all the difference in how long you can stay in NY. So lately I have been poking around online to see what types of shelters we can afford in the short term but can be expanded in the future. I love the idea of these architect designed modular homes. But because they are designed by architects they are a lot more expensive for the same amount of room than a boring old cape cod modular. Now it just so happens that I went to school for architecture and although I don’t really do all that much architecture now I know a little and I know a few architects. So what I am thinking is if this modular company that does the boring cape cods would be willing to work with us (and I get the impression that they will) we could probably have the best of both worlds. It is an exciting path to be starting down albeit a scary one.

Family Weekend

My dad and my sister have the same birthday and this weekend there was a party to celebrate. I don’t get to see my family enough. Life gets so hectic and free time is precious. Often when that free time presents itself I feel like I need to rest and recharge my battery. It is these parties that remind me that I can recharge and see my family.

I Feel Like a Star!

I have noticed lately that while I am out and about, usually on the walk to or from the subway or lunch I have been thinking about my blog. I write and rewrite what I want to say, I think about what is going, what I have been doing. This tends to feel a lot like an internal monologue and I can’t help but feeling like I am in a movie. A movie of my life… what would that be like?

Oh My God! I think I am a Nerd!

Oh dear… oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. This picture by Natalie Dee made me come to a sad realization… I am a nerd. I think that this would not have hit so close to home had I not been sitting with my buddy Aim discussing the good old days zip disks and computer clusters and irc chatting with friends who were sitting next to you. Ah those where the days. Kids, back in my day we didn’t all have our own computers and we had to go to a communal area to get our work done. I can remember when zip disks came out and they could hold 250 megs and were $20. Back in college, who on earth has $20? So I would borrow someones disk and transport my information from one computer cluster to another to get my work done. I also used to walk uphill both ways in the snow.

Cha Cha Cha Changes

Spring is in the air and things are a changing I can feel it! The snow is melting, people are wandering and enjoying the sunshine instead of scurrying from place to place as quickly as possible. I don’t know if this is just a reprieve from the brutal cold of the last week or if maybe we are done with winter.

Hey There Tiny Cupcake

KB was over Saturday and we made tiny cupcakes with butter cream frosting. To be honest, once we got the batter and frosting ready we really weren’t all that intersted in eating the cupcakes. I sent some home with KB, although there are still an army of tiny cupcakes around the house. In all we made 72 baby cupcakes and 15 normal sized. Next time I try this I am going to have more people over to decorate and eat.

Tiny Houses

I saw in the NY Times today that tiny houses are all the rage. M & I are getting closer to putting a structure on our property upstate and we have been seriously looking into prefab. The architect in me wants to have a funky cool house, but the cheapskate in me says don’t be silly and the environmentalist in me says make sure it is sustainable! We aren’t close enough that I have been doing the research but I sure am having fun checking boxes on the weehouse customization sheet.

Everything is Better With Casters

I love furniture with casters. I would put casters on everything if I thought I could get away with it. It all started with a pickled white IKEA media center with legs that M & I transformed chocolate media center with casters, a new door, and new hardware. Now when we need to get behind the TV to switch cables or vacuum it easily rolls. We actually like to make our own furniture. Some times by taking a piece that isn’t quite right and adapting it with paint or some new hardware or casters. Sometimes we start with something like cushions and build around them, which is how we got our couch. I started thinking about my love for casters when I saw this storage unit on casters at 2modern. It is so simple yet so movable.

Free Books

Today it is sleeting and windy and cold. This is the type of day that if I had my way I would curl up in front of a fire with a good book all cozy like. Currently I am reading Perfume by Patrick Suskind and enjoying it tremendously. I have been reading non stop since figuring out that the library was but a block from my office and that I could find what I wanted and make my requests online in the comfort of my own home. I have been getting knitting books, books to read and even graphic novels for M. It is fantastic. I love books and love to buy books, but I have learned that books are heavy to move and can be expensive. Now I can read anything I want, even if it is still in hardcover and when I am done I don’t have to feel guilty about it sitting on my shelf now that I am done with it.
