Funky Cardboard Shoes

il_430xn29580573These shoes are fabulous! I love that they are made from such common materials but are so sturdy and chunky and funky! And they look really comfortable to boot! (Ha ha, I said boot.) I wish my foot was a size 9! I am not sure how well the cardboard will stand up, but they are just way too cool. via

Pierogi Lasagna

lasagna3I want to college in Pittsburgh and coming from New Jersey in a more Italian than anything else family, I had never heard of this perfect food called the pierogi. Much like ravioli, it is pasta enclosing potato filling, sometimes with other things, sometimes just potato. Then you fried it up in a pan with some onions and oil. Mmmmmm. What could be more perfect? Maybe morphing this delicious bundle of carby goodness into a multilayered pan of carby goodness! We recently went to Costco and bought a humongous bag of potatoes just waiting to be made into something comforting. It must be fate! This recipe sounds like it would be good as is, but I can definitely see adding some mushrooms, or spinach, maybe some rosemary, maybe… well I think you get the idea. If it goes with potatoes and pasta, it will work in this.

Slumdog Millionaire

6_502I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. Loved it. Fabulous imagery and wonderful story. I found it utterly shocking at times, hard to watch, hilarious and so sad I had a few tears. All around a great way to spend an evening or an afternoon.

Give the Gift of Your Time

In the past few years I have become more and more torn at this time of year. I love the holiday season because of the time I get to spend with family and friends and dread it because of the pressure of giving gifts. Will they like it? Do they need it? I consider people in my family very lucky. We do well for ourselves and can afford to splurge once in a while. This means that people really don’t need another doo dad from me. While the thought is appreciated many people are trying to cut back on the amount of things they own, myself included. So now what? Last year we made donations to FINCA and Make It Right. We are heading in that direction again, although we are not sure what charity yet, but it would be nice to give something as well. What better than to extend the part of Christmas I really love which is spending time with family and friends and giving an experience rather than a physical something.

Some suggestions from Unclutterer are:

  • Paint a room
  • Update a resume
  • Plant a garden
  • Design a web page
  • Prepare a specialty meal
  • Take care of children
  • Organize a garage
  • Fix something that is broken

I would personally feel very lucky to receive a few “Help E&M work on their property this Summer” coupons in my stocking!

Gift Ideas at Rare Bird Finds

il_fullxfull48353878I am always seeing great stuff from the folks over at Rare Bird Finds, but I have to say that the gift ideas coming into my RSS reader lately are both affordable and adorable. Something for everyone in your life. I already posted about the cute doggie scarf and hat and here is a lovely felt flower which has a pinback, but I am sure you crafty folk out there can figure out how to wear it in your hair. If you are looking for some inspiration for someone on your list at just about any budget definitely check them out.

    2 Feet vs 10 Feet

boxee-netflixM&I are still quite happy with our decision to cut off cable. The money savings is nice and we haven’t noticed any huge disadvantages. At least not any that don’t have solution. At the moment we are running Windows XP on a 19″ monitor for now (a new TV purchase is in our near future) and that means that the text can sometimes be itty bitty from the couch. We often have to get up close to see what we are going to be clicking on. Well lucky for us, Life Hacker just posed a question to readers asking which they would rate as the best media center solution. We want to test out Boxee, but unfortunately it is only available for Mac. We have nothing against Macs, in fact we are generally a mac household. It is just that PCs are a few steps ahead when it comes to online watching. I will let you know when we have all the kinks worked out. I want to be clear this solution is not for everyone. There is no just turning on the TV and watching whatever is on Lifetime or TruTV. Also if you like sports you will have to make sure you get at least some reception over the air. I might suggest if you were going to try it, try cutting down to basic cable first and see how it goes. It is also helpful to have a full-time computer tech in the house. We just so happen to have one permanently on staff.

    Skulls for Dogs

il_fullxfull47936559Because we are busy New Yorkers, M&I don’t have a dog. Don’t get me wrong, we would both love to have one, I just don’t feel like we are around enough during the week to be fair. If we did I have a dog I have a hard time imagining we would dress the little guy up in crazy outfits… at least I had a hard time imagining it until I saw this adorable hat and scarf! With skulls! So cute.

    Cutest. Lunchbox. Ever.

lunchboxwater-700Delight, you crafty minx, you have done it again! Twice in one week is hardly fair! This is THE most adorable lunchbox. I love it! In these sketchy financial times, bringing a lunch is very smart and spending a little to make bringing your lunch more fun isn’t the worst investment… ok ok, I am justifying, but it is really adorable. The klean kanteen pictured is not included, but don’t most of us have some sort of reusable bottle already? So now if I order the Chelsea Buckle Tote and this lunchbox I still only pay the same shipping… My resolve is weakening. via with the same title.

    Must. Be. Strong.

meliebiancobuckleorangemodel-700Oh Delight, you evil temptress, why must you torture me? You showed me your Chelsea Buckle Tote in orange and before I could make up my mind it sold out. I figured it wasn’t meant to be and I was saved from myself. Now you have it back in stock, and here I am trying to not spend money. But I love this bag. So stylish with lots of pockets, what is not to love. And who can resist owning something in Hermes orange?
